Unless you're Bill Murray or Scarlett Johansson it's no fun being lost somewhere where you do not speak the language. You could have a need to communicate in a foreign tongue nearly anywhere: in a new state, in less known part of town or even in your own apartment if you have a international babysitter.

What do you do when you see someone who did not study English at school? You may attempt using fingers to get a few things across. But traditions differ, situations differ and that is why signs do not always properly translate your views on the issue at hand. You could carry a dictionary around and desperately sieve through thousands of pages in a split of a second. It might be burdensome if you are not that prompt. Or you could opt for a more modern and convenient solution. Like acquiring an electronic Spanish translator.
